The Battle of Hogwarts

It was the battle that rocked the wizarding world. During this fight to end all fights we witnessed the deaths of beloved characters, a long-overdue first kiss, courage in the face of evil and a spectacular final act that no one will ever forget. To mark its anniversary, here’s a timeline of the momentous battle that ended the war.

__Harry, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts__

As Harry emerged into the room beyond the passage, there were several screams and yells – ‘HARRY!’ ‘It’s Potter, it’s POTTER!’

__Professor McGonagall prepares Hogwarts for battle__

‘And now – piertotum locomotor!’ cried Professor McGonagall. And all along the corridor the statues and suits of armour jumped down from their plinths, and from the echoing crashes from the floors above and below, Harry knew that their fellows throughout the castle had done the same.

__Hermione and Ron destroy the Hufflepuff cup Horcrux__

‘So we’re another Horcrux down,’ said Ron, and from under his jacket he pulled the mangled remains of Hufflepuff’s cup.

__Hermione and Ron kiss__

There was a clatter as the Basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione’s arms. Running at Ron, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth.’
Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet.
‘Is this the moment?’ Harry asked weakly, and when nothing happened except that Ron and Hermione gripped each other still more firmly and swayed on the spot, he raised his voice. ‘OI! There’s a war going on here!’

__Crabbe attacks Ron, Harry and Hermione with Fiendfyre__

Now the fire was mutating, forming a gigantic pack of fiery beasts: flaming serpents, Chimaeras and dragons rose and fell and rose again, and the detritus of centuries on which they were feeding was thrown up in the air into their fanged mouths, tossed high on clawed feet, before being consumed by the inferno.

__Ravenclaw’s diadem Horcrux is destroyed__

A blood-like substance, dark and tarry, seemed to be leaking from the diadem. Suddenly Harry felt the thing vibrate violently, then break apart in his hands, and as it did so, he thought he heard the faintest, most distant scream of pain, echoing not from the grounds or the castle, but from the thing that had just fragmented in his fingers.

__Fred’s death__

Harry’s mind was in freefall, spinning out of control, unable to grasp the impossibility, because Fred Weasley could not be dead, the evidence of all his senses must be lying.

__Snape is killed by Voldemort and Nagini__

The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more.

__Lupin and Tonks are found dead__

As Ginny and Hermione moved closer to the rest of the family, Harry had a clear view of the bodies lying next to Fred: Remus and Tonks, pale and still and peaceful-looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling.

__Snape gives Harry memories of his childhood__

‘You are,’ said Snape to Lily. ‘You are a witch. I’ve been watching you for a while. But there’s nothing wrong with that. My mum’s one, and I’m a wizard.’

__Snape reveals he loved Lily Potter__

‘After all this time?’
‘Always,’ said Snape.

__Harry meets Dumbledore in limbo__

‘But you’re dead,’ said Harry.
‘Oh, yes,’ said Dumbledore matter-of-factly.
‘Then ... I’m dead too?’
‘Ah,’ said Dumbledore, smiling still more broadly. ‘That is the question, isn’t it? On the whole, dear boy, I think not.’

__Harry learns he was a Horcrux__

‘So the part of his soul that was in me ...’ Dumbledore nodded still more enthusiastically, urging Harry onwards, a broad smile of encouragement on his face. ‘... has it gone?’
‘Oh, yes!’ said Dumbledore.

__Neville destroys Nagini, the final Horcrux__

With a single stroke, Neville sliced off the great snake’s head, which spun high into the air, gleaming in the light flooding from the Entrance Hall, and Voldemort’s mouth was open in a scream of fury that nobody could hear, and the snake’s body thudded to the ground at his feet.

__Molly Weasley kills Bellatrix__

__Harry realises he is the Elder Wand’s master__

‘So it all comes down to this, doesn’t it?’ whispered Harry. ‘Does the wand in your hand know its last master was Disarmed? Because if it does ... I am the true master of the Elder Wand.’

__Harry vanquishes Voldemort__

Voldemort was dead, killed by his own rebounding curse, and Harry stood with two wands in his hand, staring down at his enemy’s shell.

__The battle is over__

Somewhere in the distance they could hear Peeves zooming through the corridors singing a victory song of his own composition:
‘We did it, we bashed them, wee Potter’s the One, And Voldy’s gone mouldy, so now let’s have fun!’
‘Really gives a feeling for the scope and tragedy of the thing, doesn’t it?’ said Ron.
