Neville, Harry and the prophecy

A prophecy revealed in Order of the Phoenix mentions ‘The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches…’ But the description could have applied to Neville just as much as Harry, and the two share much in common...

  1. Both were born in July, ‘as the seventh month dies’
  2. Both had parents in the Order of the Phoenix...
  3. …but neither was brought up by them
  4. Their parents narrowly escaped Voldemort three times
  5. The Sorting Hat couldn’t decide which house to put them in immediately...
  6. …but sorted them both into Gryffindor house
  7. Both pull the sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat…
  8. …and both destroy at least one Horcrux

On the toad

Five of our favourite Trevor-related moments

Trevor was a gift from Neville’s Great Uncle Algie, who accidentally dropped the eight-year-old out of a window. Happily, Neville bounced.

He’s a serial escape artist who makes ‘frequent bids for freedom’.

Professor Flitwick once made Trevor fly around the Charms classroom. His students were ‘dying’ to learn how to make objects fly after that.

Trevor is given a second shot at childhood, when he is turned into a tadpole by a Shrinking Solution.

Harry gets a faceful of Stinksap from an erupting Mimbulus mimbletonia plant while trying to prevent Trevor’s latest escape.

Neville and the brave-o-meter

Neville Longbottom displays flashes of extreme courage throughout the books: we’ve rated some of his plucky moments

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Stands up to Malfoy, telling him ‘I’m worth twelve of you’.

Stands up to Harry, Ron and Hermione and tries to prevent them sneaking out of the Gryffindor common room so they don’t lose any more house points.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Faces a Gryffindor Boggart in the form of Snape, his biggest fear, and successfully defeats it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Joins Dumbledore’s Army (D.A.)

Neville is one of the six D.A. members who head to the Ministry of Magic, to try to save Sirius Black.

Tells Harry not to give the Death Eaters the prophecy, despite being tortured.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Joins Professor McGonagall in fighting the Death Eaters after Dumbledore’s death.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Leads the resurrected D.A. with Ginny and Luna. Stands up to the Carrows despite being physically punished and threatened.

BRAVEST MOMENT Neville charges at Voldemort when it appears that Harry is dead.

Destroys Voldemort’s final Horcrux, Nagini the snake, with the sword of Gryffindor.
