For the first time, Pottermore has created our own interpretation of what the Malfoy family tree looks like, along with a new portrait of the Malfoys we know best: Lucius, Narcissa and Draco.
One of the earliest Malfoys, Armand Malfoy travelled to Britain with William the Conquerer.
Nicholas Malfoy was present around the fourteenth century, where he was known to ‘dispatch’ Muggle tenants under the guise of the Black Death. Convenient.
Lucius Malfoy I
The first Lucius Malfoy was alive during the sixteenth century, and was just as wily as the second – he unsuccessfully tried to win the hand of Queen Elizabeth I.
In the 17th century, Brutus Malfoy edited the nasty anti-Muggle periodicial, Warlock at War. He was responsible for giving ‘Muggle-loving’ wizards a bad reputation.
Septimus Malfoy was a highly influential political figure in the 18th century, with current Minister for Magic Unctuous Osbert being known as ‘his puppet’.
Although never proven, Abraxas Malfoy was believed to have been part of a shady plot to overthrow the first Muggle-born Minister for Magic, Nobby Leach.
Lucius Malfoy was a famous supporter of Lord Voldemort, and used his highly influential status to win favour with the Ministry of Magic. After the Dark Lord’s downfall, Lucius gave up fighting and provided evidence against the Dark Lord.
Narcissa Malfoy was notably not a Death Eater, but still followed the values set by her husband. She contributed to Lord Voldemort’s downfall by lying about the death of Harry Potter to protect her son.
After years of bullying Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy briefly joined Lord Voldemort’s side. However, after failing in his mission to kill Albus Dumbledore, it wasn’t long before Draco left his Death Eater days behind him.
Astoria Greengrass was a student at Hogwarts. Her older sister, Daphne, was a Slytherin in Draco’s year.
Scorpius Malfoy attended Hogwarts in the same year as Albus Potter.
Cygnus Black III
Cygnus was the uncle of Sirius Black.
Before marrying Cygnus, Druella was part of the Rosier family: a last name that has been associated with Death Eaters in the past.
Alphard Black left his nephew Sirius Black ‘quite a bit of gold’ after he passed away.
Walburga Black was Sirius Black’s mother. Her portrait, which hangs in Grimmauld Place, screams about ‘Mudboods’ and ‘scum’ if disturbed.
Orion was Sirius Black’s father and had two sons. Interestingly, all three are named after stars and constellations.
Sirius Black was the rogue of the Black family, and burned out of the family tree by his own mother for not supporting the pure-blood beliefs of his family.
Regulus Black was a Death Eater, and Sirius’ brother. Although he was eventually killed, he obtained a locket before he died, which was one of Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes.
Andromeda Black was cast out of her family for marrying a Muggle-born wizard, Ted. She looks startlingly similar to her sister, Bellatrix.
Bellatrix Lestrange was a Death Eater and one of Lord Voldemort’s most dangerous followers. She was eventually killed by Molly Weasley.
Rodolphus Lestrange was also a Death Eater and was involved in the torture of Alice and Frank Longbottom.
Rabastan was Rodolphus’ brother, and another Death Eater serving Lord Voldemort.
Edward ‘Ted’ Tonks was a Muggle-born wizard, and father of Nymphadora. His wife was cast out of her pure-blood obsessed family for marrying him.
Nymphadora Tonks was an Auror and a Metamorphmagus; the rare magical skill to change your appearance. She was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and died at the Battle of Hogwarts.
Remus Lupin was a former Hogwarts professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Remus became a werewolf after being bitten by Fenrir Greyback as a child.
Lyall Lupin was a world-renowned authority on Non-Human Spiritous Apparitions, and Remus’ father. After a run-in with Fenrir Greyback at the Ministry, the werewolf attacked his son.
Hope Lupin was a Muggle who worked in an insurance office in Cardiff and met Lyall after he rescued her from a Boggart.
Edward ‘Teddy’ Lupin
Teddy Lupin was left an orphan after his mother and father died at the Battle of the Hogwarts. He was brought up by his grandmother, with Harry Potter as a godfather.
