The Triwizard Tournament

When Hogwarts hosted the Triwizard Tournament in Harry’s fourth year, things didn't exactly go to plan. Relive the dragons, merpeople, mazes and more in our grand timeline.

September

Professor Dumbledore announces that Hogwarts will host the Triwizard Tournament — a competition where three champions will compete for the Triwizard Cup and the glory of their school.

‘It is my very great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year.’

‘You’re JOKING!’ said Fred Weasley loudly.

30 October

Students from neighbouring wizarding schools Durmstrang and Beauxbatons arrive to join the Tournament.

Nobody was very attentive in lessons, being much more interested in the arrival that evening of the people from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang; even Potions was more bearable than usual, as it was half an hour shorter.

Hallowe’en

The Goblet of Fire chooses four champions instead of three.

There was a long pause, during which Dumbledore stared at the slip in his hands, and everyone in the room stared at Dumbledore. And then Dumbledore cleared his throat, and read out –

‘Harry Potter.’

Harry swears he didn’t enter, but Ron doesn’t believe him.

‘I didn’t put my name in that Goblet!’ said Harry, starting to feel angry.
‘Yeah, OK,’ said Ron, in exactly the same sceptical tone as Cedric.

24 November

The first task is to retrieve a golden egg from a dragon.

Before the dragon knew what he had done, or where he had disappeared to, he was speeding towards the ground as fast as he could go, towards the eggs now unprotected by her clawed, front legs – he had taken his hands off his Firebolt – he had seized the golden egg.

Christmas Day

Hogwarts hosts the Yule Ball.

Professor McGonagall stared deliberately around the class.

‘The Yule Ball is of course a chance for us all to – er – let our hair down,’ she said, in a disapproving voice.

Much to Ron’s dismay, Hermione’s date to the Yule Ball is Viktor Krum.

‘It’s hot, isn’t it?’ said Hermione, fanning herself with her hand. ‘Viktor’s just gone to get some drinks.’
Ron gave her a withering look.
‘Viktor?’ he said.

Start of the year

Harry discovers the golden egg’s clue to the second task.

‘Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you’re searching, ponder this:
We’ve taken what you’ll sorely miss,

An hour long you’ll have to look,
And to recover what we took,
But past an hour – the prospect’s black
Too late, it’s gone, it won’t come back.’

24 February

The Second Task is set in the Great Lake. Harry must try to rescue Ron.

‘Mr Harry Potter used Gillyweed to great effect,’ Bagman continued. ‘He returned last, and well outside the time limit of an hour. However, the Mer-chieftainess informs us that Mr Potter was first to reach the hostages, and that the delay in his return was due to his determination to return all hostages to safety, not merely his own.’

Start of the summer term

Triwizard judge Barty Crouch Sr goes mad and attacks Viktor Krum.

‘I vos attacked!’ said Krum, sitting up now, and rubbing his head. ‘Mr Crouch or votever his name –’

‘Crouch attacked you? Crouch attacked you? The Triwizard judge?’

24 June

Harry approaches the third task; a maze full of obstacles.

They walked onto the Quidditch pitch, which was now completely unrecognisable. A twenty-foot-high hedge ran all the way around the edge of it. There was a gap right in front of them; the entrance to the vast maze. The passage beyond it looked dark and creepy.

Harry and Cedric seize the Triwizard Cup and win the tournament together. The Cup is a Portkey that takes them to a graveyard.

They had left the Hogwarts grounds completely; they had obviously travelled miles – perhaps hundreds of miles – for even the mountains surrounding the castle were gone. They were standing instead in a dark and overgrown graveyard; the black outline of a small church was visible beyond a large yew tree to their right.

Cedric is killed on Voldemort’s orders.

A blast of green light blazed through Harry’s eyelids, and he heard something heavy fall to the ground beside him; the pain in his scar reached such a pitch that he retched, and then it diminished; terrified of what he was about to see, he opened his stinging eyes.

Cedric was lying spread-eagled on the ground beside him. He was dead.

Lord Voldemort is revived by Wormtail.

Whiter than a skull, with wide, livid scarlet eyes, and a nose that was as flat as a snake’s, with slits for nostrils ...
Lord Voldemort had risen again.

Surrounded by his Death Eaters, Harry and Voldemort duel.

Voldemort was ready. As Harry shouted ‘Expelliarmus!’, Voldemort cried, ‘Avada Kedavra!’

Harry escapes with Cedric’s body and reveals that Voldemort is back.

Harry let go of the Cup, but he clutched Cedric to him even more tightly. He raised his free hand and seized Dumbledore’s wrist, while Dumbledore’s face swam in and out of focus.

‘He’s back,’ Harry whispered. ‘He’s back. Voldemort.’

Mad-Eye-Moody is exposed as Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr, disguised by Polyjuice Potion.

‘This is not Alastor Moody,’ said Dumbledore quietly. ‘You have never known Alastor Moody. The real Moody would not have removed you from my sight after what happened tonight.’

End of school year

Hogwarts mourns Cedric.

‘Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right, and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.’
