## Hufflepuffs aren’t always pushovers
The problem with being a house which is often underestimated, is that many imagine that they can just walk all over you. Yes, Hufflepuff might have a reputation for being the kindest of the four houses, but in no way does that mean its members are weak willed. There are plenty of witches and wizards who prove this wrong. Nymphadora Tonks was hardly someone you could call a pushover. A perfect example would be her relationship with Remus Lupin. She refused to just let him decide that they shouldn’t be together for the sake of her safety and didn’t give up, eventually winning him round to her way of thinking. Justin Finch-Fletchley and Ernie Macmillan were also two Hufflepuffs that seemed to have a stubborn streak. After the incident in *Chamber of Secrets* with the snake in Duelling Club, there was nothing you could say to convince them that Harry wasn’t the heir of Slytherin. So, if you’re a member of this hard-working house, it doesn’t mean you are able to be easily swayed.

## You can be brave and be a Hufflepuff
While the primary Hufflepuff traits don’t specifically mention courage, they're often still a brave bunch who are willing to stand up for what they believe in. You only have to look at how they behaved in the Battle of Hogwarts to see that. Many of them stayed behind to fight – the only house that had more volunteers was Gryffindor. And before the battle, they were the second quickest after Gryffindor to stand up and defend Harry from the Slytherins. And if we are talking about bravery, we must mention Cedric Diggory. He volunteered to represent his school in the Triwizard Tournament – a competition that was known to be difficult, challenging and have its fair share of scary moments. You couldn’t go up against a fully-grown dragon guarding its eggs without having nerves of steel. There probably are some Hufflepuffs who aren’t particularly courageous, but we reckon there are a lot more who are.

## You can be adventurous and be a Hufflepuff
Gryffindor is normally the house which is associated with having a thirst for excitement and adventure – but witches and wizards in other houses can share that personality trait too. Take a glance at Newt Scamander and you’ll recognise that. He was a Hufflepuff that travelled the world looking for weird, wonderful and often dangerous magical creatures. He had so many escapades – there was his time in New York where he not only had to round up all the beasts that had escaped from his case, but made a daring escape from MACUSA, and he came face-to-face with the Dark wizard Grindelwald. He even went to Paris, at Albus Dumbledore’s request, to try and track down Credence while knowing that it was hardly risk free (especially as he was banned from international travel at the time). So, if Newt is anything to go by, there’s nothing to say you can’t be a Hufflepuff with a love of travel, a need to explore and a desire to discover new things.

## Hufflepuffs aren’t bland or boring
Out of all the houses, many would say that Hufflepuff has the least exciting characteristics. Where Gryffindors are known for their daring, Slytherin for their cunning and Ravenclaw for their intelligence, being known for working hard might not seem quite as glamorous. However, that is just an assumption. Nymphadora Tonks was a highly skilled Auror with a punky style, a penchant for bright pink hair and as a Metamorphmagus was able to change her appearance at will. You don’t get more exciting that that. Having said that, just because Hufflepuff might not appear to be quite as flashy as the other houses, that doesn’t make them dull in the slightest. They don’t need to show-off or be attention seeking – and it’s the other house’s fault if they choose to underestimate or not see the value of this loyal and trustworthy bunch.

## Hufflepuffs can be just as intelligent as the other houses
Unfortunately for Hufflepuff, they seemed to have picked up an unfair reputation for being the least clever of all the houses. Nevertheless, you only need to scratch the surface to realise that wasn’t true. The Head of Hufflepuff, Professor Sprout, was a supremely talented witch with an extensive knowledge of magical flora. What she didn’t know about those plants and fungi just wasn’t worth knowing. Grogan Stump was one of the most popular Ministers for Magic of all time and he was also a Hufflepuff. He was even responsible for establishing the Department of Magical Games and Sports. There was also Bridget Wenlock, the famous Arithmancer from the thirteenth-century. She was the person who uncovered the magical properties of the number seven – she definitely needed to have some brains to make that discovery. Even though Hagrid may have referred to Hufflepuff as ‘a lot o’ duffers’, there are so many people that prove that wrong.

## You don’t have to toil away in the background because you’re a Hufflepuff
Cedric Diggory was a Prefect, Quidditch star, a heartthrob and a Triwizard champion – he also happened to be a Hufflepuff. He didn’t just fade into the background but was a fantastic role model for his house, and certainly challenged some of the stereotypes surrounding it. Many think that as a hardworking bunch, most Hufflepuffs are happy to fly under the radar and have no desire to be in the spotlight, seek glory or do great things. Yet, as Cedric proved, that is incorrect. He wasn’t the only one to challenge this view – lots of other Hufflepuffs have done brilliant things. One such person was the founder of this house, Helga Hufflepuff, whose achievements speak for themselves and whose name has gone down in history. When you think about it, if you belong to a house that is known for always trying their best, it’s no wonder so many have gone on to do fantastic things.

How I learned that my house, Hufflepuff, was not 'a lot o’ duffers' by Emmy Griffiths

Growing up with the Harry Potter novels, I always knew what to think about the Hogwarts house Hufflepuff and - spoiler alert - it wasn't favourable. Ever since Hagrid informed 11-year-old Harry, and therefore 11-year-old me, that the Hufflepuff house was meant for ‘a lot o' duffers’, I cast them aside. If Hagrid wasn't a fan, then neither was I. And who has time to even consider putting on a yellow and black scarf when all the action is happening over with the Gryffindors?  

As such, when I eagerly took the Pottermore Sorting Experience a few years ago, fully expecting to pop up as either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw (and frankly, even Slytherin would do), I can even now recall the moment the screen turned that ironically bright and peppy yellow. My housemates, who were watching me be sorted (after one was also placed in Hufflepuff and the other in Ravenclaw) screamed with mirth at what we all considered to be my misfortune. After all, who really wants to be placed in the house whose very founder described its students as ‘the lot’? Who wants to be classed as 'the lot' instead of brave or intelligent or resourceful? 

Staring at the screen, I thought there must have been some mistake. Maybe I really would have preferred to walk through a leafy forest at night rather than by a babbling brook? Maybe my worst fear wasn't really a locked room with an eye watching me from the keyhole? Maybe I should try the Experience again? Of course, I wasn't the only one to have an adverse reaction to being placed in Hufflepuff.  Sophie, 23, who was placed in Hufflepuff despite her determination to be a Gryffindor, said: "My first though was, 'Oh, why am I not in Gryffindor?' Gryffindor is the place where you want to be."  

Many of the Hufflepuff characters from the early days of the novels didn't really help us feel better about our new house either. Justin Finch-Fletchley narrowly survived two snake attacks (thanks to Harry and his friends), pompous Ernie Macmillan cared about school even more than Hermione but with none of her fun-factor, Susan Bones had to be the one to go and splinch herself during Apparition lessons and as for Hannah Abbott, come on. When your claim to fame is being the first person on the register at school, you know you're really scraping the barrel. Ahem, no offence Hannah.   

Of course, Hufflepuffs weren't all a boring bunch. Things changed by *Goblet of Fire*, when the man, the legend, the hero Cedric Diggory came into the mix. Smart, brave, not too bad on the eyes, Cedric was perhaps the first to change everything for the good Hufflepuff name. He proved that Hufflepuffs could be intelligent, they could be noble, and that they are indeed "unafraid of toil" as the Sorting Hat once said. You also had to hand it to his fellow Hufflepuffs, plenty of them joined Dumbledore's Army to fight against Voldemort following his death. Indeed, Emma, 28, was "chuffed" when she was sorted into Hufflepuff. She said: "I think they're the underdogs and I've always felt like that. Also, Cedric Diggory was a real Hogwarts champion." That being said, I still wasn't convinced.  

Then, J.K. Rowling gave me the very information about the badger clan that I was looking for.  

In a Pottermore article entitled, ‘Why you should fall in love with a Hufflepuff’ she said: "In many, many ways, Hufflepuff is my favourite house... There comes a point in the final book where each house has the choice whether or not to rise to a certain challenge... The Slytherins, for reasons that are understandable, decide they'd rather not play. The Ravenclaws, some decide they will, some decide they won't. The Hufflepuffs, virtually to a person, stay, as do the Gryffindors. Now, the Gryffindors comprise a lot of foolhardy and showoff-y people... the Hufflepuffs stayed for a different reason. They weren't trying to show off, they weren't being reckless. That's the essence of the Hufflepuff house."  

After Jo's superb explanation of what it really meant to be a Hufflepuff, my perception of the house couldn't have been more different. I began to feel pride that I might have some traits considered worthy for such a bunch. Yeah, I wouldn't have stayed at the Battle of Hogwarts to prove myself! Frankly I would have been terrified. I like to think I would have stayed to help out, though.  

Then came along *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them* and *ding ding ding*, I was sold. Our second wizarding world hero, Newt Scamander, repped the badgers while saving magical creature lives and pinning down Grindelwald during his NYC adventure, and the world suddenly realised that Hufflepuffs weren't all that bad. Even Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson shouted out his allegiance to Hufflepuff, tweeting: "Huffpuffs in the house!" Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter series, also went through a journey of acceptance, and tweeted: "I take back everything I ever said about being a Hufflepuff. I was obviously born to be in that house."

\* The complexity or otherwise of the entrance to the common rooms might be said to give a very rough idea of the intellectual reputation of each house: Hufflepuff has an unchanging portal and requires rhythmic tapping; Slytherin and Gryffindor have doorways that challenge the would-be entrant about equally, the former having an almost imperceptible hidden entrance and a varying password, the latter having a capricious guardian and frequently changing passwords. In keeping with its reputation as the house of the most agile minds at Hogwarts, the door to the Ravenclaw common room presents a fresh intellectual or philosophical challenge every time a person knocks on it.

As a security device to repel non-Hufflepuffs, tapping on the wrong barrel, or tapping the incorrect number of times, results in one of the other lids bursting off and drenching the interloper in vinegar.

A sloping, earthy passage inside the barrel travels upwards a little way until a cosy, round, low-ceilinged room is revealed, reminiscent of a badger’s sett. The room is decorated in the cheerful, bee-like colours of yellow and black, emphasised by the use of highly polished, honey-coloured wood for the tables and the round doors which lead to the boys’ and girls’ dormitories (furnished with comfortable wooden bedsteads, all covered in patchwork quilts).

A colourful profusion of plants and flowers seem to relish the atmosphere of the Hufflepuff common room: various cactii stand on wooden circular shelves (curved to fit the walls), many of them waving and dancing at passers-by, while copper-bottomed plant holders dangling amid the ceiling cause tendrils of ferns and ivies to brush your hair as you pass under them.

Small, round windows just level with the ground at the foot of the castle show a pleasant view of rippling grass and dandelions, and, occasionally, passing feet. These low windows notwithstanding, the room feels perennially sunny.

Nevertheless, it ought not to be concluded from the above that Hufflepuffs are dimwits or duffers, though they have been cruelly caricatured that way on occasion. Several outstanding brains have emerged from Hufflepuff house over the centuries; these fine minds simply happened to be allied to outstanding qualities of patience, a strong work ethic and constancy, all traditional hallmarks of Hufflepuff House.

## Author’s note
When I first planned the series, I expected Harry to visit all four house common rooms during his time at Hogwarts. There came a point when I realised that there was never going to be a valid reason to enter the Hufflepuff room. Nevertheless, it is quite as real to me as the other three, and I always knew exactly where those Hufflepuffs were going when they headed off towards the kitchens after lessons.

To be the Chosen One, it seems that there are certain qualities you must possess. You must be courageous, honest and true. You must take on any and all responsibilities thrust upon you and thrive. Oh, and of course you have to save the world, preferably on your own, and try not to get too annoyed about it. 

While Harry Potter and Newt Scamander, both the ‘Chosen One’ in their own right, have these qualities, they really couldn’t have been more different kinds of heroes. Here’s why... 

## Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor 

The best way to sum up the fundamental differences between Harry and Newt is by looking at which Hogwarts house they belonged to. 

Harry was in Gryffindor, which took students for qualities including bravery and daring. Gryffindors typically also had some less admirable traits, including recklessness and short tempers (any enraged Gryffindors reading this will only prove our point!). These were traits that, [love him for it or not](/features/adorable-problems-harry-had-to-suffer-through-in-philosophers-stone), Harry possessed in bundles: he was heroic and brave, yes, but let’s not forget his year of angst in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*.

As a result, Harry’s reaction to being the Chosen One was somewhat mixed. Although he accepted his fate and rose to the occasion from his very first year at Hogwarts, he also tried to fight against it – particularly following the death of his godfather, Sirius Black, in which his own recklessness contributed to Sirius coming to his rescue at the Ministry, where he was killed.

Meanwhile, Newt was a Hufflepuff, who are known to be hard workers, loyal and dedicated. He rarely grew angry in *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, but instead accepted his fate when he was arrested by Tina, and remained cool-headed after being given the death penalty (and fought his way out, of course). In fact, the only time we really saw Newt upset was when his suitcase was confiscated at MACUSA, putting the creatures he was so dedicated to caring for at risk.

While Harry spent plenty of time in his own head and at odds with his fate, particularly when he found out he would have to kill Voldemort, it appeared that Newt would always do the Hufflepuff thing, and do whatever was right for those he cared about the most. Yep, a Gryffindor and a Hufflepuff indeed.

## Fate vs Choice 

Harry was prophesied to be the wizard that Voldemort would mark as his equal, and so his fate as the Chosen One was selected for him. Of course, he rose to the occasion and dealt with his destiny like a trooper, but the fact remains that if he hadn’t needed to do it, chances are that Harry would have spent his years at Hogwarts chilling with Ron and Hermione, training at Quidditch and barely getting by on his lessons (kind of like he did anyway, but without the permanent threat of death). In short, Harry didn’t choose his fate, it chose him – with a little help from Dumbledore, of course.

On the other hand, Newt chose to be a protector and defender of [the magical creatures he took care of](/features/why-the-niffler-deserves-his-own-spin-off-series). No one asked it of him; he did it willingly because of his passion for animals and his compassionate nature, and even risked his life several times by placing their needs above his own.

## Friendships 

Newt always considered himself to be a loner, and it is made evident in the first film that his one close friendship at Hogwarts with Leta Lestrange ended due to rocky circumstances, though we have yet to find out exactly what happened. Apart from Leta, and before meeting Tina, Queenie and Jacob, it was clear that Newt struggled to build friendships with… well, anything that didn’t live in his suitcase.

As for Harry, he was a loner before Hogwarts thanks to his bullying relatives, the Dursleys, and immediately made [lifelong friends upon starting at the school](/features/why-ron-weasley-is-our-chosen-one). Since he was treated poorly all of his childhood by his family, it would have been easy for Harry to distance himself from others. Instead, he was a natural born leader who proved popular with his peers and always relied upon his friends, whether he knew it or not. Newt, however, always felt he had to do it alone (before travelling to NYC, of course).
