Hogwarts was a place full to the brim with different groups of friends all brought together by actual magic. But we only scratched the surface of the amount of them that we saw, so we’ve pinpointed a few of our favourites that we would have loved to have seen more of behind the scenes.

Parvati and Padma Patil and Lavender Brown

We know the ins and outs of the Gryffindor boys’ dorm – we know of Dean Thomas’s love of West Ham and we see the boys interacting all the time – but the curse of the third-person narrative that mostly followed Harry means that we didn’t get the same insight into the girls’ dorm. In fact, the stairs turned into a slide if a boy even dared try and get up there…

Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil are firm friends in the books, and we only ever really heard anything of them when they served the main plot, like when Lavender dated Ron, and the Patils attended the Yule Ball with Harry and Ron.

Female friendships weren’t often at the forefront of Harry Potter, so seeing the small gang of two Gryffindors and a Ravenclaw would not only show the girls having some much-needed time to shine, but also highlight the benefits of inter-house friendships. And we’d loved to have seen more of poor Parvati’s reaction to Lavender’s sudden love of ‘Won-Won’.

The Gryffindor Quidditch Gang

One of the other friendships we would love to have seen more of is that of the three Gryffindor Chasers. Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson and Katie Bell clearly worked well together. They were in sync on the pitch, and with Angelina and Alicia in the same year, and Katie only a year younger than them, the three girls would have undoubtedly have been friends off the pitch, too.

Before Alicia and Angelina left in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more insight into the trio’s friendship would no doubt have shown us a back and forth of tactics, taking the mickey out of Oliver Wood for his over the top speeches and hardcore training regime – and then later for Angelina doing exactly the same thing! They would have gossiped about the twins, and the likelihood of their friendship being solidified beyond Hogwarts is high. Also, they just seemed really cool.

The three of them arrived together for the Battle of Hogwarts (along with Oliver Wood), so it’s nice to think that on surviving, they continued to be friends.

Blaise Zabini and his ‘Cool’ Slytherin Group

Every school has that collection of ‘cool kids’ that think they’re popular. That, to us, is Blaise Zabini and his group of ‘Cool Slytherins’. Including the likes of Pansy Parkinson and Millicent Bulstrode (plus her cat, obviously), we would like to have seen more of the ‘other’ Slytherins in Harry’s school year - in a sort of morbid curiosity sort of way. We saw Draco, Crabbe and Goyle constantly, of course, but Blaise and co. seemed equally unpleasant.

Ernie’s Hufflepuff Gossip Gang

True to all schools, Hogwarts also had its little friendship groups that spent their time talking and gossiping with each other in shady corners. As a minor adversary to Harry and his friends, Ernie Macmillan (usually with Justin Finch-Fletchley and a nearby Hannah Abbott) wasn’t the Chosen One’s biggest fan and liked to take a sassy swipe or two.

Sure, they weren’t exactly warm to Harry, which was pretty undeserved, but we would’ve loved to be a fly on a wall when Ernie and his clique got into full gossip mode - just to see how bad it got. And they weren’t all terrible. At the Battle of Hogwarts, they were there to do their bit, at the end of the day.

The Creevey brothers

When Colin Creevey first starts in Harry’s second year he seems to be everywhere; taking photos, generally getting in the way and then being tragically Petrified by the Basilisk.

When his brother Dennis (who seemed to be an equally excitable carbon copy of his older brother) started school the pair got to bounce off each other in wonderful ways, such as getting way over-excited about the Giant Squid. Colin having a miniature version of himself was perfect, and we loved seeing the brothers haplessly try and amend those ‘Potter Stinks’ into ‘Potter Really Stinks’ badges.

We wish we could’ve seen more of their brotherly tomfoolery.

The Hogwarts teachers

We know we saw the Hogwarts teachers a lot actually teaching… but we’re talking about their friendships outside of class, those great chats they must have had in the staff room.

Imagine Professor McGonagall letting rip about Dolores Umbridge to Professor Flitwick and Professor Sprout. Imagine the gossip whenever a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher came in. Imagine Dumbledore and McGonagall sharing a Firewhisky, putting the world to rights…
