The first game to launch under the Wizarding World-inspired Portkey Games label is available to download today – how exactly do Portkey Games tie into Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts?
Above, you can see a timeline of the main events from the Wizarding World’s past, present and future, including the original seven Harry Potter books, the Hogwarts Library books, the Cursed Child play, and the Fantastic Beasts films. In parallel is the new label from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Portkey Games, which will draw inspiration from J.K. Rowling’s original stories, without her direct involvement, to create new gaming experiences that put the player at the centre of their own Wizarding World adventures. The label was created to bring gamers and fans new gaming experiences that allow them to delve into the magic of the Wizarding World in immersive ways.
A Portkey is an object from the Harry Potter stories, enchanted to instantly transport anyone touching it to a specific location. Most of the time, a Portkey is an everyday object that would not draw the attention of a Muggle. For Portkey Games, it symbolizes how games under this label would transport fans to their own adventures inspired by the Wizarding World.
Each experience offered under Portkey Games will take place in the Wizarding World. J.K. Rowling is supportive of Portkey Games and has entrusted the design and creation of the games to developers involved. Developers can create a variety of new and unique gaming experiences that are all inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original stories so you may find some interesting new locations, characters, story elements, etc.
The first title under the Portkey Games label, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, is now available to download. Hogwarts Mystery is set in a different time period for players to create their own alternative Wizarding World timeline, the 1980s. In this role-playing mobile game, players will be able to immerse themselves in those authentic Wizarding World settings. For the very first time, they can create their own personalised student character, visit their house’s common room and make choices that will define their own Hogwarts story. As they progress, players will learn magical skills from some familiar faces, from crafting potions under Snape’s critical eye, to Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall.
With the launch of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery – and more mobile and console gaming experiences to come – Portkey Games welcomes the growing Wizarding World fan community to bring their own magical adventures to life and explore more of this ever-widening universe – past, present and future.
