New York Comic Con, the city’s annual celebration of all things pop culture, had some Harry Potter-themed surprises for fans this weekend, from a special Cursed Child panel to a giant Pensieve model.
It’s a big year for American Harry Potter fans: we’ve had the 20th anniversary of Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child officially came to New York, picking up some Tonys along the way, and this week, the incredible British Library exhibition, Harry Potter: A History of Magic also opened at the New York Historical Society. What better way to celebrate than a knees up at New York Comic Con?
Here’s a look at some of the best moments from the event.
The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child panel reflect on Broadway
Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni, Poppy Miller, Paul Thornley, Alex Price, Anthony Boyle and Sam Clemmett were out in force to join a special Cursed Child panel at the convention. The original London cast, who moved to Broadway earlier this year, reflected on their time coming to America, while Paul Thornley reflected on the reaction of the fans perfectly:
Audible construct a huge Pensieve experience
The Pensieve was first introduced to us in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and is described as a mysterious bowl full of a substance that is not quite liquid, not quite air, but in fact, a place to store memories. Certainly, a magical item we all wish we could have in real life.
This is exactly what we’re after, a giant Pensieve! Curiosity is not a sin, so let’s check it out... pic.twitter.com/hGAwDsXMm8— Pottermore (@pottermore) October 4, 2018
Thankfully, the ‘wizards’ down at Audible have helped make that a reality: constructing a huge Pensieve experience - on display at Comic Con.
Audible invites visitors to walk inside the Pensieve, while iconic moments from the Harry Potter audiobooks narrated by Jim Dale come to life in this multi-sensory environment. From there, fans can pick a vial from up to six iconic Harry Potter characters, from Dumbledore to Harry himself, following them on a journey through some of their most memorable moments. This is an installation we won’t forget in a hurry. Get it? Because of memories? Oh, never mind.
The cosplayers come out in full force
When it comes to Comic Cons, dressing up is serious business, and New York’s was no different. Here are some of our favourites – and obviously we’re a bit biased, so they’re all Wizarding World ones.
Thanks for the memories, New York Comic Con. Same time, next year?
