Cursed Child has only graced the Lyric Theatre in New York for a few short months so far (opening back in April), but has already scooped up some tremendous accolades at this weekend’s Tony Awards – including Best Play.
Starring many members of the original West End cast, the play had a fabulous night at the coveted awards ceremony that celebrates the best of Broadway.
Aside from Best Play, director John Tiffany collected the Tony for Best Direction of a Play – which can sit at home next to his Olivier he won back in 2017. Other awards for Cursed Child went to Best Scenic Design (Christine Jones), Best Costume Design (Katrina Lindsay), Best Lighting (Neil Austin) and Best Sound Design (Gareth Fry).
Here’s how the night panned out – and you can bet there were a few magical surprises along the way…
First up, Sam Clemmett (Albus Potter) had a bit of trouble with his bow tie before he even got to the ceremony…

As the awards began to flood in for the hard-working team, things got a tad emotional, especially for writer Jack Thorne who, along with producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, picked up the big prize of the night: Best Play.
As an esteemed TV writer, playwright, not to mention huge Harry Potter fan, the accolade marked a massive moment for his career. Here’s Jack backstage discussing the importance of the wizarding world to him as a child, as captured by Variety.
