So, what’s the story of Ilvermorny and what are its houses? And how do those houses compare to Hogwarts?

In wizarding America, Ilvermorny school was founded by Irish immigrant Isolt Sayre, who escaped a tragic childhood and her cruel Aunt Gormlaith by moving to America, and forging a brand-new life for herself overseas. After learning all about Hogwarts in her youth, Isolt never got to attend the school herself, due to Aunt Gormlaith denying her the chance to go. And so, once she later set up Ilvermorny School, Isolt was inspired by all she had learnt of Hogwarts and gave it similar traditions, such as how magical students would be assigned one of four houses.

So while Hogwarts has Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff, Ilvermorny has four houses based on magical creatures found across America. In fact, Isolt’s own family decided upon the house creatures – each picking one that meant something to them. Isolt picked the Horned Serpent; her husband James picked the Pukwudgie; and their adopted sons Chadwick and Webster picked a Thunderbird and Wampus respectively.

As a guide for you, the magical creatures in question are as follows…

Horned Serpent – a ‘great horned river serpent with a jewel set into its forehead’

Pukwudgie – ‘a short, grey-faced, large-eared creature’

Thunderbird – a creature that ‘can create storms as it flies’

Wampus – ‘a magical, panther-like creature that is fast, strong and almost impossible to kill’

According to J.K. Rowling, the Ilvermorny houses represent the witch or wizard as a whole, with the mind represented by the Horned Serpent, the body represented by the Wampus, the heart by the Pukwudgie, and the soul by the Thunderbird. We also know that the Horned Serpent house favours scholars, the Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers, and Thunderbirds, adventurers.

So, for example, in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Tina is a Thunderbird and Queenie is a Pukwudgie. Oh, and if you were wondering, J.K. Rowling is a Thunderbird.

So, how will you fare? And how will it compare to your Hogwarts house? Try the Ilvermorny Sorting Experience and see.
