When Dan Fogler first met Fantastic Beasts co-star Alison Sudol

You’ve got to love a ‘respect at first sight’ story between Fantastic Beasts cast members.

Dan Fogler’s got a husky Brooklyn accent. The kind of voice that makes everything sound wry or tough by default. It takes me a second to notice when he’s being sentimental. Talking about his Fantastic Beasts co-stars, his voice breaks – just a little, but enough to give his affection away.

Dan plays No-Maj character Jacob, a New Yorker who gets caught up in the magical chaos that follows Newt. As two of the movie’s central characters, the chemistry between Dan and Alison Sudol, who plays Queenie, was always going to be important.

‘Alison is an angel. She’s an angel,’ Dan says, emphatically.

‘The moment I saw her, I knew her energy was just perfect. When she gets in the make-up and she’s Queenie and she’s got the lights on her, she’s got skin that glows, you know? When I saw her for the first time, I was like, holy.... It’s Alison Monroe over here – Marilyn’s cousin.’

Now that he’s pointed it out, it’s obvious, isn’t it? There is something of Marilyn’s cheeky, guileless charm in Queenie’s look. The curls, the smile, the saunter, the hyper-feminine vibe – it’s all very Marilyn. But Dan’s not satisfied comparing Alison to just one classic Hollywood icon. He sees the world in pop culture allusions, as you’ll notice. He’s a film aficionado; he can’t help it.

‘She has that feminine, delicate quality about her that also lends itself to comedy in an Audrey [Hepburn] kind of way,’ he says.

‘Together we’ve got a bit of an Adelaide and Nathan Detroit [from Guys and Dolls] thing going. So I'm always referencing something, that’s where I come from. I do a lot of homages in my work so I’m always referencing something. That’s what it feels like with the two of us.’

A musical theatre reference is perfectly fitting for Dan and Alison, of course. They’re both musicians in their other creative incarnations. Dan does rock-comedy in a band called 2nd Rate and Alison is the lead singer of the band A Fine Frenzy. ‘She’s the real professional,’ says Dan. ‘She’s a rock star.’
