J.K. Rowling is a woman of many surprises – and yesterday, New York-based fans got a wonderful shock when she turned up on the TODAY show. Pottermore was there to follow the action and meet up with the cast of The Crimes of Grindelwald for a day of celebrations.

J.K. Rowling and many members of the star-studded Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald cast were out in force in New York yesterday to celebrate the release of the hotly anticipated second film, coming out 16 November.

The excitement began rather early at the TODAY show plaza, with The Crimes of Grindelwald stars Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner and Claudia Kim posing for photos and handing out wands. Oh, and the TODAY show’s lovely guide dog-in-training was there, too – as if things couldn’t get any better.

But that was just the beginning, as the screenwriter/producer of the new film herself turned up for a surprise visit and interview.

Speaking to the TODAY show, J.K. Rowling joined the cast to chat about the second film.

‘This is like time travel, I feel like I’m back about 20 years, this is amazing,’ J.K. Rowling said of the crowd’s reaction. The writer also teased that The Crimes of Grindelwald would give us some interesting insights into Albus Dumbledore’s origins.

‘These movies are largely about how Dumbledore became Dumbledore,’ she teased.

After the TODAY show excitement, Jo and the rest of the cast went to meet a group of very lucky fans, and gave us all a clue to look out for in the film’s third trailer – which is also out later today.

The fans were then treated to a brief journey of behind-the-scenes magic from the upcoming movie, including a detailed guide to the characters’ wands, as explained by head prop maker Pierre Bohanna. Can you guess each character's wand?

Pierre explained that each wand is true to the owner’s personality or style – so Newt’s wand is rather scuffed, as he works so hands-on with several quite boisterous magical creatures, while revered alchemist Nicolas Flamel’s wand looks centuries-old; a sign of the many, many years behind him.

Next up, we were treated to a display of The Crimes of Grindelwald’s glorious costumes, designed by the award-winning mastermind Colleen Atwood – who was also in attendance to explain her thoughts behind the outfits. For example, Queenie’s moth pin represents a ‘metamorphosis’, while Grindelwald’s embellished outfit is described as ‘kind of rock star’.

To cap off the day, the cast members of The Crimes of Grindelwald mused on the new movie to come, which will finally be released in just under two short months.

‘This movie has some lovely scenes that are reminiscent of the original movie, but the first movie is all of us meeting, and this one is – we are dispersed and we’re trying to get the band back together,’ Dan Fogler explained.

And as for favourite beasts in this film, the cast were united in agreement on the one to look out for:

Baby Nifflers, every time.’ Callum Turner said instantly to nods from his co-stars. Understandable.

Then, a quick-fire round with Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol on their fellow Wizarding World family members.

Funniest on set?

Dan Fogler, without question, the pair answered unanimously.

Most professional?

Alison votes for Eddie Redmayne. Well done, Eddie. ‘He kind of sets the tone, really, and we try and follow suit,’ Katherine added.

Biggest Wizarding World fan?

Although the pair agreed it was certainly Ezra Miller, they also argued that his brain was able to ‘retain more information’. ‘We’re all really big fans,’ Katherine assured us.

Don’t worry Katherine, we have absolutely no doubt.
