Some newly released images from the next Fantastic Beasts movie give us our first look at Albus Dumbledore, Newt Scamander, Tina Goldstein, Jacob Kowalski and Gellert Grindelwald in the film, along with some unfamiliar characters…

We can piece together a couple of clues about the new movie thanks to these fresh stills from the film, which show us new costumes, new settings and new characters.

Photo of Newt Scamander and Jacob Kowalski on the streets of Paris

This first photo shows Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander reunited with Dan Fogler’s Jacob Kowalski as they walk the streets of 1920s Paris. After meeting in New York in the first film, Jacob and Newt became firm friends… before poor Jacob had to have his memory erased on account of being a No-Maj. Well, he seems a lot better now, walking with purpose, carrying that bucket. What could all that be about?

Young Albus Dumbledore

Next up is Jude Law looking wonderfully dapper as Albus Dumbledore. In a similar outfit to the one we saw him in his first character photoshoot, Albus is sitting with an unknown character, surrounded by interesting trinkets and contraptions. From the Harry Potter books, we know that Dumbledore’s office was always filled with mysterious magical objects. Could this be where Dumbledore is sitting in this new photo?

Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law behind the scenes of Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald

This is an adorable behind-the-scenes shot of Eddie Redmayne chatting with his new co-star, Jude Law, both looking good in their 1920s costumes. In the new film, their respective characters, Newt and Dumbledore, will have to work together to try and stop Grindelwald’s ascent to power.

Gellert Grindelwld and his follower, Vinda Rosier

We also get a new look at Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald himself, staring up at something ominously, along with a very well-dressed companion. Her name is Vinda Rosier and she’s played by Poppy Corby-Tuech. In the days of Lord Voldemort, we knew of another Rosier, Evan Rosier, who was a Death Eater. So it looks like another member of the family is fraternising with Dark wizards, too.

In this image we see Newt alone in a dark dungeon-type room, standing over a rushing stream of water. We’re not sure where he is, but he doesn’t look best pleased with the situation. But at least he still has his trusty case by his side.

Tina Goldstein and Newt Scamander

Tina's hair! That jacket! In the first shot of Newt and Tina (Katherine Waterston) together, the pair look like they could run their own super-sleuth detective agency, looking rather concerned next to a row of numbered filing cabinet drawers. No idea what that’s all about, but we’re loving Newt and Tina’s new threads.

Newt Scamander reading a postcard from Paris

In the final image, we see Newt fondly looking at a postcard from Paris. But who is it from? Is this the reason he ends up going to the French capital? Or perhaps he’s already there, penning something himself. If so, to whom? We simply have to know.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is released 16 November this year. To learn more about what to expect from the film, take a look at our breakdown here.
