Warner Bros. Studio Tour London ‘Return to Azkaban’ now open: Celebrate 20 years of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This year marks two decades since the cinematic release of *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*. To celebrate, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London have added a whole host of props, costumes, and sets from the third film. 

Earlier this week, we admired those brand-new additions to the Studio Tour – transporting us straight back to 2004 and the release of this fantastic film. Here are just a handful of our highlights…

## The Great Hall’s new look
Let’s start with the heart of Hogwarts, the Great Hall. As soon as we stepped into it, we were greeted by 100 floating candles suspended above our heads. Once we were able to tear our eyes away from them, we spotted the Frog Choir at the front of the hall, ready to sing at the top of their lungs. Let’s hope none of them had a frog in their throat!

## Open your Inner Eye…
And we *have* to talk about one of our favourite new additions, Sybill Trelawney’s Divination classroom. Bedecked in rich fabrics with the signature round tables, velvet pouffes and let’s not forget the tower of teacups. But most importantly, in our opinion, you can see the original teacup that contains ‘The Grim’. But observe it at your peril… we all remember what happened to Ron’s Uncle Bilius.

## Hold on tight! 
The Knight Bus is not known for being the smoothest form of transportation… though it does look rather fun. And we were excited to see just how they captured that memorable ride. We won’t spoil too many secrets but look out for the moving beds!

## Riddikulus!
Is there a more iconic scene in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* than Professor Lupin’s Boggart lesson? We know it’ll take years before the image of Snape in *that* Riddikulus outfit leaves our head. So, we were thrilled to see the new Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom addition – complete with Snape, Lupin and a wardrobe with a mind of its own…

## What’s that under the bed?
In Harry’s third year at Hogwarts, he ends up with a brand-new textbook that bites back. We spotted that slightly terrifying tome during our tour. Let’s just say keep an eye out under Harry’s bed at the Leaky Cauldron – you’re in for a surprise.

## Can you find Scabbers?
A Studio Tour visit wouldn’t be complete without an Activity Passport to collect stamps, answer trivia, hunt for snitches and new for this feature, finding Scabbers via interactive stations located around four of the sets. Be sure to pick up a passport during your visit!

Universal Studios invites you to ‘seize the summer like never before’ with a collection of new experiences launching in the upcoming months – and Harry Potter fans have double the reason to get excited, with the introduction of “Hogwarts Always” and “Cinesational: A Symphonic Spectacular” coming this June.

The first, Hogwarts Always, is a stunning new projection show debuting in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade on the 14th of June. 

Set on select nights at the park, fans can gaze in awe as this new illuminating experience takes guests on a journey through iconic Hogwarts moments, set against the radiant backdrop of the famous castle and accompanied by a newly arranged score recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Expect dazzling light effects and fan-favourite moments of a year in the life of a Hogwarts student combined for an unforgettable evening. And for an extra personal flourish, the show will also feature four different ending options - each a different Hogwarts house. You’ll have to grab a viewing spot to see if your house takes home the House Cup!

Harry Potter fans should also check out Cinesational: A Symphonic Spectacular, also debuting on the 14th of June.

This night-time show, set in the waters of the Universal Studio Florida lagoon, will put on performances of iconic movie scores, leveraging special effects and groundbreaking technology to breathe new life into these beloved soundtracks – which of course includes Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. The lagoon show will feature new higher-than-ever fountains and over 600 drones to help create movie magic as you listen to your musical favourites. Sounds like it’s really going to make a splash.

The news comes only a few months after we revealed the upcoming launch of Universal Epic Universe, which will include new wizarding world additions to the parks, such as 1920s Paris and the British Ministry of Magic. Anyone got any Extendable Ears? You might need some extras for this big upcoming project.

Scheduled for late 2025, get ready to enjoy the Harry Potter audiobooks in a whole new way – as this latest project plans to cast over a hundred voice artists to take on some of your most beloved wizarding world characters. 

Each of the seven English language audiobooks will be released sequentially for a global audience, and will sit alongside and complement the iconic single-voice English language recordings by Jim Dale and Stephen Fry. 

Here’s a little announcement video to get you even more excited.

The project is set to be a real tour de force in audio production. Alongside a new ensemble cast, the audiobooks will be further enhanced with high quality sound design in Dolby Atmos, alongside a stunning original score and real-world sound capture, all created to make your experience of the wizarding world feel even more authentic. 

And as for casting? Audible and Pottermore Publishing will be working with casting directors and agents to find the best voices for all the characters.

Neil Blair, Chairman of Pottermore Publishing called the project a “sophisticated, immersive audio experience”.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Audible on what will be a ground-breaking audio edition of the beloved Harry Potter stories,” he said.

“J.K. Rowling’s storytelling lends itself perfectly to the application of new audiobook technologies, and we’re certain this sophisticated, immersive audio experience will not only add a new listening dimension for existing fans but will introduce a whole new generation of listeners to the wizarding world.” 

This new listening experience will be exclusive to Audible, which is also home to all the existing Harry Potter audiobooks and their spin-offs. This new upcoming project is part of Audible’s bountiful library of family-friendly selections, and will certainly make your enjoyment of the Harry Potter stories all the more magical.

Speaking about the new collection, Miraphora Mina, [who founded MinaLima with her creative partner Eduardo Lima](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/magic-of-minalima-interview), told us about being inspired by the charming quirks of the magical shopping district.

'[Diagon Alley](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley) was one of our favourite sets to design on the Harry Potter films and, within that, creating the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes joke shop was a dream assignment,' she said.

'Our inspiration for Diagon Alley was Dickensian London: colours, textures, fonts and words all evoked a slightly-familiar yet by-gone era but this bustling street of shops was set in present day and the people we saw thronging the streets were witches and wizards – a magical world existed just out of sight of [Muggles](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles)!'

## Mr Ollivanders

Unlike some of the more colourful, vibrant shops scattered around Diagon Alley, Ollivander's wand shop is described as 'narrow and shabby', but steeped in important wizarding history, [with a family business stemming back centuries.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/mr-ollivander)

Here, Minalima have brought that ancient legacy into the design. And you can even see the messy piles of wand boxes through the dimly lit windows!

## Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes

Now for something a tad more colourful. The cheerful business of [Fred and George Weasley](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/fred-and-george-weasley) is a physical embodiment of their personalities: boisterous, idiosyncratic and explosive. Literally explosive, actually, look at those fireworks! 

Even the finer details are suitable mischievous. You can see the phrase "masterpieces of modern magical mayhem" across the window frames alongside a nod to the twin's famous [Puking Pastilles](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/ranking-the-wizarding-world-sweets) product through the glass.

## Flourish & Blotts and Florean Fortescue's ice cream parlour

In this image, we get to celebrate two of our favourite things in one fell swoop: books and ice cream.

We visit Flourish & Blotts a couple of times in the book series: the famous bookshop is where we meet [Gilderoy Lockhart](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/gilderoy-lockhart), Lucius Malfoy, and an extremely anxious staff member who has to stock the rather animated tome, the Monster Book of Monsters.

In this illustration, Minalima have perfectly captured the ramshackle beauty of any old bookshop. 

Then there's [Florean Fortescue's](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/florean-fortescue) ice cream parlour - which Harry visits on multiple occasions during his temporary stay at Diagon Alley in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*.

We love some of the creative flavours on display here, from "Butterbeer and ginger" (yum) to...frog legs with peanut butter. Hmm, we'll have to think about that one.

Ah, but of course. Our much-loved Hogwarts Headmaster famously has a penchant for Muggle sweets, so you can see a few snuck in here. In the UK, we call these Sherbet Lemons. In the US, the books namecheck these hard-boiled treats as Lemon Drops.

Either way, Dumbledore loved his confectionary so much, he often named his [office](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/locations/dumbledores-office) passwords after them.

In the UK, it's important to have a brolly within a 1-mile radius at all times, for rain is never far away. However, on this occasion, this was a friendly nod to Rubeus Hagrid, who was often seen with his [trusty pink umbrella](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/rubeus-hagrid-and-the-case-of-the-pink-flowery-umbrella) - heavily implied to contain his broken wand, that was snapped when he (wrongly!) got expelled in his youth.

Whatever's going on in there, it is a considerably more magical object than your standard umbrella at any rate.

## Books and cleverness...

Take a closer look at that mixing board. Hmm, they don't seem like standard buttons to us. As much as we'd love a "cleverness" button in real life, this was actually a wink towards [Hermione's](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/hermione-granger) legendary quote. Oh, you know the one.

Kevin Bayne, Development Director, Kimberly Hamilton, Narrative Director and Andreas Theodorou, Studio Art Director have become bona fide [Hogwarts](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) experts during the course of creating this beloved Harry Potter mobile game. 

On the title’s 6th anniversary, we spoke with the team on how far the game has come.

## What was the inspiration for creating Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery originally, and how has that vision changed in the past 6 years?

__Kevin:__	Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery was originally envisioned as a unique narrative experience that allowed a player to take the wizarding world on the go, while drawing inspiration from other popular products at the time.

However, as the team poured more into the game, it began to evolve. As fans of Harry Potter ourselves, we couldn’t help but add in more and more of the things we loved from the books and films. The game takes our players on a journey that lets them experience life at Hogwarts, and interact with things like Magical Creatures and [Quidditch](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch), while also building friendships and romances, competing against rivals, learning more about their favourite professors, and experiencing a rich narrative that’s really unique for a mobile game.

When I first joined the project years ago, the plan was to never leave Hogwarts. With a linear main quest line, we began to realise that we had an opportunity to expand beyond that vision and offer players an experience they never had before. It has been incredibly exciting and rewarding to delve into what life is like in the broader wizarding world, and what it could be like to graduate from Hogwarts and continue your journey beyond.

It would be a fun conversation with my past self explaining how our players are out exploring the greater wizarding world and starting their journey as an adult. It’s pretty incredible where this game has grown to and we’re excited for everyone to see what we have on the horizon.

## How did you choose the direction for the Hogwarts Mystery’s story, and how has it evolved from your initial vision?

__Kim:__ 	I joined the team five months after the game’s worldwide launch, so there was already a great story foundation in place to build upon. Six years later, it’s hard to pick one narrative evolution because there have been so many! Quidditch introduced a whole new style of gameplay and story with three original characters Skye, Orion, and Murphy, who are close to my heart. 

Romance has really blossomed in the game, beginning with the Celestial Ball which had been inspired by the canonical [Yule Ball](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball) that Harry, Hermione, and Ron had attended. Now romance quests are among our fan favourites, and our dating feature that extends from Hogwarts to Beyond presents another unique way to build meaningful relationships with original characters.

And perhaps there’s been no bigger story step forward than our [Beyond Hogwarts expansion](https://www.harrypotterhogwartsmystery.com/your-hogwarts-adventure-is-just-beginning/) that launched in July of last year. It’s the ultimate way we can narratively reward our loyal longtime players, by extending their journey beyond school and giving them an opportunity to apply all of the magical skills and knowledge they acquired during their years of playing Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.

## Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has a great mix of both canon characters and original characters exclusive to the game. How do you create characters that fit so well into the wizarding world?

__Andreas:__	The characters are so fleshed out by our writers, that by the time we start concepting – ideas are already pouring out! Anyone from any department can contribute to those ideas, which are then digested by the concept artists. They will also reference existing canon characters, analyse how their aesthetics reflect their persona, and apply similar rhythms to our designs. During that process we create multiple versions, with each one emphasizing a different side of the personality and backstory. We then circle back with the narrative team for a selection and final touches.

For canon characters specifically, we do take the book descriptions into account as well as the films. Our goal is to design them in a way that feels true to the visual style we’ve created for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery while ensuring that they look and feel like the characters fans have created in their minds (because we’re fans too). Likewise for our original characters, we reference existing Harry Potter media a lot to ensure they feel like someone who could exist in the wizarding world.

## Were there any specific fan reactions to in-game features, storylines or characters that most surprised you?

__Kim:__	It was the fan response to the death of an original character in Year Six that most surprised me and has stayed with me. It was important to us narratively that the game follows a similar emotional trajectory to the books, so we knew there were times when the story would take dark turns.  This fate was originally planned for a different NPC, but when I pitched this character to the team instead, there was such a gasp in the room that we knew we had to explore it.

The planning began about a year in advance of when the chapter would drop, and it required support from all departments, not just in the narrative and visual storytelling but in masking the data so that players would be truly surprised. What we couldn’t have known was that when this chapter was released in early 2020, that it would be a scary time in the world.

I remember being concerned that players who look to Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery as a welcome reprieve from their day would be finding heartbreak instead, and an ongoing storyline that had the remaining characters dealing with their grief in a very real way for quite some time. But while the shock of the character’s death did hit our players hard, what was remarkable to me was the positive response and player feedback we received about our handling of the grief in the story and how it even helped some players through their own emotions at the time.

The beautiful fan art and tributes from players that we still receive for this character four years later move me still, and those of us on the game who worked on this story often talk about its ability to reach our players emotionally as one of our proudest accomplishments as a team.

## Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery looks so unique, while also being really authentic to Harry Potter. How did you establish the art style for the game - and how has it evolved since 2018? 

__Andreas:__ 	We knew that with this game, story is king. The stories would be complex, pushing the envelope of current narrative mobile games. The art style needed to support that, and not hold us back from a cinematic experience. That helped us identify key elements such as expressive faces, rich environments and emotional lighting.

In addition, we wanted to stay true to the iconic locations and the actors that brought the wizarding world to the big screen. From there we explored a gamut of styles that allowed us to do all the above, and narrowed it down to one that we thought our fans would enjoy and would be technically feasible. We’ve maintained consistency with that style for the last six years, as we didn’t want to have discrepancies in the game, but have gradually improved the fidelity of the visuals with better tools and practices.

## What were some of your favourite creative decisions you’ve had to make while developing this game?

__Kevin:__	One of my favourite creative decisions I’ve gotten to make involved helping the team decide how to work in an easter egg as we were designing a new Magical Creature (I can’t tell you which – I don’t want to spoil it!). The team works very hard to ensure that all the details for each creature are following the canon designs and details already in place, but there are times where we get to flex our creative muscles and put our own spin on different aspects of how they look or animate. That’s an incredibly fun and rewarding part of working within the wizarding world.

## What are some of the biggest challenges working on a game like this?

__Andreas:__ 	The sheer scale of our content! So much content! We have created hundreds and hundreds of locations and characters, and there are no signs of slowing down. Our stories continue to expand the game’s lore, and it’s what keeps me excited to work on this title after so many years. 

[Beyond Hogwarts](https://www.wizardingworld.com/news/harry-potter-hogwarts-mystery-team-talk-beyond-hogwarts) alone launched with over 20 new and updated characters, plus over 15 new environments – and has expanded further since. We’ll be releasing Volume 1 Chapter 20 soon, and can’t wait to share more about what’s coming next!

## What are some of the funniest work chats you’ve had behind-the-scenes? Maybe trying to design the perfect Puffskein or figure out the logistics of a certain spell?

__Kevin:__	“In-game Bug Report” discussions can lead to some of the funniest chats among the team, honestly. If you’re not following along in real-time, you can come back to a conversation that may describe something quite funny or absurd without the context to explain the statement. “Characters heads are missing”, “Unicorn Missing Horn or is this a horse?”, “Scene missing magic. Did someone move the magic?”, “Characters flying backwards during Quidditch”. 

While we take every report seriously, you have to laugh at the kind of out-of-context discussion topics they can lead to in a world like Harry Potter.

## What has the release of “Beyond Hogwarts” last year meant for the game’s story and overall direction, and where do you hope to go next?

__Kim:__	Creating the Beyond Hogwarts expansion was like launching a new game within an existing one! We loved having the constructs of Hogwarts to craft stories around, but we couldn’t keep our players in school forever. So it was a fun challenge to work together across departments, and with our Harry Potter brand partners, to invent an incredible future for the player’s character – with a story that introduces new original characters and environments, and can exist within the boundaries of the wizarding world while running parallel to the events In Harry’s own timeline.

It’s been gratifying to see how Volume One of Beyond Hogwarts has been embraced by our Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery community. We’re excited to continue their journey soon with the launch of Volume Two, when we’ll really expand their world with mysteries to solve in iconic locations around the globe – where we’re sure to see some familiar faces and places from canon.

__Andreas:__ 	Beyond Hogwarts was the most thrilling and stressful feature we’ve added to the game since it launched in 2018! It was something we had debated doing for years, and we were fortunate enough to be in the position that it made sense to us and our story to make it a reality. The Art team was excited to read the “where are they now” descriptions for each of our beloved characters and begin to reimagine them as adults. We made the decision not to age their faces significantly, as we wanted to ensure recognisability and for our players to maintain their emotional connection to them... instead opting to tell their evolved story through outfits and hairstyles.

Beyond Hogwarts was also a great opportunity to conceptualize what the wizarding world, but also the muggle world, looked like outside of Scotland (where Hogwarts and much of our existing in-game world exist). We wanted to emphasize the difference of these two realities, while understanding that they both contribute to the unique aesthetic of the Harry Potter universe.

After a 12-week refurbishment, Platform 9 ¾ is back! Okay, not the [fictional one](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/locations/platform-nine-and-three-quarters) from the Harry Potter books – but the beloved real-life shop that lives in King’s Cross Station in London, serving up all your favourite Wizarding World goodies. 

The Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9 ¾ features five different themed areas, each one carefully curated for an exciting shopping experience. Home to wands, robes, sweet treats, toys, and other popular Harry Potter collectibles including seasonal products and new ranges, there is plenty for every type of Wizarding World fan to explore.

Evanna Lynch, otherwise known as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter film series, was on hand to give the shop the grand re-opening it deserved. And *of course* to sample some of the Spectrespecs on offer.

With over 5,000 individual props on display, the shop will bring the magic to life for visitors of all ages.  And watch out for all the magical minutiae the shop has to offer -  such as a countdown clock to the most famous day in our Wizarding World calendar: [September 1st.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/back-to-hogwarts)

Upon entering, visitors will step into Platform 9 ¾, an old-fashioned train station themed area with flooring inspired by original King’s Cross tiling. The area displays Platform 9 ¾ themed products along with stationery, books and more. 

Delving deeper into the shop, visitors will soon find themselves immersed in a Quidditch inspired space offering Hogwarts house products where they can purchase their uniform in time to begin the new school year. As [Mr Ollivander](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/locations/ollivanders) is keen to remind us, the wand chooses the wizard - and that wand is certainly an essential item for any Hogwarts student. No pressure, but Platform 9 ¾ boasts over 2,000 wands including 27 fan-favourite character choices.

Moving through the shop, fans will find themselves in an area inspired by magical creatures that will be home to plush toys with everything from owls to [Acromantula](https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file/creatures/acromantula) as well as games and new ranges. From the adorable to the beastly, channel your inner Hagrid and see what leaps out at you. (Hopefully not an Acromantula!)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Concert promises a truly magical moment this July, with the first Harry Potter film being brought to life with a rousing live musical performance. 

Audiences will experience the critically acclaimed Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Justin Freer performing John Williams’ iconic score to the entire first film live to picture.

You'll be watching Harry's first adventure on an epic 39ft wide high-definition screen with John Williams' legendary work playing alongside.

Mark Mackie, the representative for Castle Concerts, spoke of his pride at bringing Hogwarts back to Scotland.

‘For many years we have been hoping to bring together three of Scotland’s major gifts to the world; Harry Potter, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Edinburgh Castle, for this incredibly special project,' he said. 'We are absolutely delighted that the planets have aligned this year and we are able to present this truly unforgettable experience.'

In the Harry Potter books, Harry's first experience of Butterbeer is famously exquisite.

Harry drank deeply. It was the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted and seemed to heat every bit of him from the inside.

And from the moment we read about it in the books, fans around the world were left curious about this comforting concoction.

The iconic drink, reminiscent of butterscotch with hints of shortbread, was brought to life in 2010 when The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened at Universal Orlando Resort, quickly followed by the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, introducing fans to that unique, comforting flavour now available to be tasted at official experience locations around the world. In fact, Butterbeer has become so beloved, fans can enjoy a whole season of it, starting now, through to the end of April.

## Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood to introduce limited-edition treats

Universal Studios theme parks (in Hollywood and in Orlando) have created an array of Butterbeer-themed treats to properly commemorate the season. Look out for a Butterbeer ice lolly coming soon - and at Universal Orlando Resort only - Butterbeer caramels will also be available for peckish visitors.

## New ice cream counter coming to Universal Studios Hollywood’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

We know Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour all too well from the Harry Potter books, and now, fans in Los Angeles can get a taste! Universal Studios Hollywood announced a Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream counter is coming to Honeydukes - and Butterbeer ice cream will be on the menu! Opening on Friday, 29th March, the all-new venue will feature 10 decadent and savoury soft-serve ice cream flavours, including Butterbeer, Banana, Chocolate, Mint, Orange, Vanilla, Toffee Nut, Granny Smith Apple, Pistachio and Toffee Apple.

## Warner Bros. Studio Tour London to serve new Butterbeer desserts

From Butterbeer lattes to Butterbeer pancakes, the Studio Tour in London is going Butterbeer-bananas! Alongside the Backlot café's traditional souvenir tankard, guests will be able to get this served with Butterbeer ice cream (in a souvenir dish) and even a Butterbeer cupcake alongside, all on a bespoke tray.

Visitors of  Harry Potter New York will get a unique opportunity at the Butterbeer Bar to be one of the first to taste the brand new Butterbeer Muffin. This delicious new baked good joins the ranks of Harry Potter New York’s iconic Butterbeer offering, which includes the classic drink in both Draft and Bottled versions (with the latter available in MinaLima’s original style, alongside an exclusive MACUSA version), together with tempting ice-cream.

An exciting Butterbeer truck will be roaming around a few US states bringing delicious joy to those lucky ones who discover it.
